Bring In The Year Of The Rooster Right With Complimentary Gelato Messina

Lunar New Year celebrations are in full swing around the world, bringing in the Year of the Rooster with signature style. Our mates at Westpac are celebrating Lunar New Year in partnership with the City of Sydney, and they’ve begun rolling out a few extra goodies over the city to celebrate.

Last weekend you may have seen buildings across Sydney – including the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and Town Hall – lit up red, a symbol of happiness, good fortune and joy. This exquisite showcase of colour is done to ward off evil spirits in preparation for the Year of the Rooster.

In addition, Westpac have created an enormous Wall of Fortune at the northern end of East Circular Quay too. Running until February 12, the Wall of Fortune is a giant screen displaying up to 300 Lunar New Year messages every minute. Visitors can take a photo of the screen to reveal their own Lunar New Year fortune and share it on social media using the hashtag #westpaclunar.

Our pick of the festivities? Westpac’s Lunar Lantern Hub in Martin Place. Featuring a 50-metre canopy of red lanterns, nightly DJs (including Tikki Tembo, Beth Yen and Sasha Moon), entertainment and food and drink. Grab a cocktail from the Taylor’s pop-up bar, dig into Bao Stop’s famous Peking duck fries and indulge in Gelato Messina’s custom gelato cookie sandwiches – which have been exclusively created to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Grab some friends and relax under the canopy of auspicious red lanterns and join in on a friendly game of Mahjong at The Star’s Fortune Mahjong Garden.

Now, about that complimentary ice cream: As part of the hub offering and to mark Westpac’s bicentennial, every night from 5pm Westpac will give the first 200 customers that show their Westpac Debit/Credit card or banking app each day at the Martin Place hub a complimentary Gelato Messina Lunar New Year’s edition ice cream – yesssssss. The hub will run until February 12 – for more information, head here.
