Finally, An Honest V-Day Card

Valentine’s Day. Love it or hate it, it comes around every year. For some, it’s a celebration of true love. For others, it’s materialistic and ridden with insecurities. Either way stay with us here, because whether you’re single or taken, you’re about to be exposed to a completely new way of looking at love.

Alain de Botton is one of the co-founders of The School Of Life. He has written books about everything from sex and happiness, to travel and career. On a recent visit to Sydney he enlightened us on why society’s understanding of love might be intensely flawed. So, he knows a thing or two about love and relationships and he doesn’t hold back.

In the lead up to Valentine’s Day, de Botton has chimed in with some grim but refreshing truths. His publishers are calling it a “more realistic approach” to Valentine’s Day.

With the release of his book The Course Of Love, de Botton has created a less than romantic Valentine’s card that you can download, print and give to your significant other. The front reads, ‘I love you so much, which really means…’

Then inside de Botton drops nine relationship truth bombs including ‘I will try to change you’, ‘I will possess you, then resent you for trapping me’ and ‘It will always be your fault’. Ouch.

The point? De Botton gives us an alternative to the blissful Hallmark ideal of love, which might make us disillusioned about our own imperfect relationships.

Reading through this confronting list forces us to face the most challenging parts of being in a relationship – the parts that no one wants to say out loud. It’s a painfully direct insight into the complexities of love, and with this new approach, maybe we’ll develop healthier and more clear-eyed expectations of love.
